Sermon: June 08, 2019

“From a madman to a King”

We will cover three portions of scripture…

  • Taken from the account of the mad man of Gadara in Mark 5:18-20

    • And When he (Jesus) was come into the ship, he that had been possessed with the devil prayed him that he might be with him. How be it Jesus suffered him not, but saith unto him, “Go home to thy friends, and tell them how great things the Lord hath done for thee, and hath had compassion on thee. And he departed, and began to publish in Decapolis how great things Jesus had done for him: and all men did marvel.

  • This is the account of Jesus sending the disciples off into the lands in Mark 6:12-14

    • And they went out, and preached that men should repent. And they cast out many devils, and anointed with oil many that were sick, and healed them. And king Herod heard of him; (for his name was spread abroad)

  • Now let’s look at the woman with the issue of blood in Mark 5:25-34

    • And a certain woman, which had an issue of blood twelve years, 26And had suffered many things of many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was nothing bettered, but rather grew worse, 27When she had heard of Jesus, came in the press behind, and touched his garment. 28For she said, If I may touch but his clothes, I shall be whole. 29And straightway the fountain of her blood was dried up; and she felt in her body that she was healed of that plague. 30And Jesus, immediately knowing in himself that virtue had gone out of him, turned him about in the press, and said, Who touched my clothes? 31And his disciples said unto him, Thou seest the multitude thronging thee, and sayest thou, Who touched me? 32And he looked round about to see her that had done this thing. 33But the woman fearing and trembling, knowing what was done in her, came and fell down before him, and told him all the truth. 34And he said unto her, Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace, and be whole of thy plague.

I need to stop right here for a second & I’ll put all this together in a minute. I feel I need to show you how I see this woman. The Bible refers to her as a “Certain Woman”, which in those days would have most likely meant she was a woman of means, which means she most likely had a husband & many friends. However, this woman had an issue of blood for 12 years. During this time the laws of impurity covered the procedures for an issue of blood in a woman in the book of Leviticus. To understand fully the issue of blood & it’s impurities it’s centrality in the Rabbinic context must be seen in the context of the Biblical Purity System. This system mainly pertains to the temples, sacrifices & priestly gifts and were highly guarded from ritual impurities. The penalty for polluting the temple is “Karet”. “Karet” is defined as punishment of premature death at the hands of Heaven as a penalty for prescribed number of sins committed deliberately. All the Purity laws hinged on this law, so to deliberately break this law could have led to death at the most and at the least meant you had to be “set apart” during your period of uncleanness. Taking all that into consideration and the fact that this woman had an issue of blood for 12 years it’s most likely safe to say that she had gone these 12 years having to go everywhere she went announcing that she was unclean to avoid any one from touching her by mistake and also to avoid her being accused of deliberately making someone unclean by her touch. This was the law of the day. I’m further convinced that after a while this brought great shame to her, not to mention loneliness due to the fact that she had no human contact lest she make someone else unclean. Can you imagine 12 years without touching your children, hugging your spouse or hugging your parents? Being “set apart” she had to wash her clothes at a separate time & when she went into the markets not only was she physically ill from the lose of blood but she had to announce her shame with the word “unclean” everywhere she went as not to deliberately cause someone else to become unclean knowing the purification laws highest penalty could have possibly been death and at the lowest she would have made this other person she touched be unclean and having them be forced to go thru undo rituals of this one simple touch. So everywhere she went she had to announce “unclean”. This woman for 12 years had gone to physicians & spent all her money trying to get better. Her body was racked with pain & weakness from this condition. I’m sure that it was noised abroad the condition she had & as she walked thru the years her family and friends slowly distanced her & her life of solitude became her walk of shame, this thing that the enemy used against her to keep her bound & bent & having to constantly announce her bondage as “unclean” broke her in a way BUT as the testimony of Jesus coming reached her ears, her faith began to grow. This is how I see this taking place…

The Bible says that the mad man of Gadara was sent home by Jesus to tell his friends& family all that had been done to him. This testimony had reached across nations as Jarius had heard of Jesus and came to him to pray for his daughter & in the midst of that, as the crowds gathered around Jesus, I see this woman who had been separated all this time and forced to walk in shame stop as she saw the crowds gathering in the streets. People rushing past her as she was trying to stay hidden as to not be forced to announce “unclean”. She heard the people announcing the coming of Jesus as they ran to see him. Now as we all know, faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God. In her hearing the people saying Jesus is coming, Jesus is coming… I see her faith growing. Then I see her saying to herself… “If I can just touch the hem of His garment, I KNOW that I’ll be made while.” So, I see her taking this instrument of shame that the enemy has placed upon her & that she had to announce her uncleanness everywhere she went & heading down to get close enough to touch the hem of Jesus’ garment. I see her at first ashamed saying quietly the word “unclean” &realizing that people moved away from her & she could move forward a little bit. God showed me this woman & the next time she had to announce “unclean” and a few more people moved. I see her realizing that she was moving closer & in that moment the faith that was beginning to rise up in her began turning the one thing that had been her bondage all those years into her weapon to part the seas of people before her to get to the hem of His garment. I see her the next time she spoke a little more loudly with a little more boldness in her voice “unclean” & they parted again & this went on and on as she made her way thru the crowd to his feet… “unclean” then louder “Unclean” and again louder “UNCLEAN”, “UNCLEAN” I see her using the tool that the devil had used to keep her bound for 12 years as an avenue of moving every obstacle in her way & to open up a path, clearing a way to his feet until she saw the opportunity to touch the hem of His garment. (Question: How many know it is time to use what the devil has held you in bondage with all these years as a tool to get to the feet of Jesus?) Now, FINALLY, I see her reaching out as she’s on her knees & she touches the hem of His garment & he stopped, he turned & said “Who touched me?” (Oh, if we could just get tothat point where our touch stopped Him in his tracks.) Now, we know how the rest of this story goes. But let’s take note here that in the end of this encounter with Jesus, after she had told all the truth to him of what had been done to her, she goes on record as being the first woman that Jesus called “Daughter”. For he said, “Daughter your faith has made thee whole.”

To this point, this Certain Woman was the first to be healed in this manner of touching the hem of His garment but I’m sure from the scriptures that she told the testimony because we see in Mark 6:56 that it is said” and whithersoever He entered into villages, or cities, or countries, they laid the sick in the streets & besought Him that they might touch if it were the border of His garment: & as many as touched Him were made whole. Before this woman it’s not recorded anywhere that anyone touched the hem of His garment & was made whole, however here we are after 3 amazing testimonies: the mad man of Gadara, Jarius’ Daughter& the woman with the issue of blood, we see Jesus as He is traveling, now the words of these testimonies have opened the faith of other people that if they could just touch the hem of His garment they would be healed & made whole.

We have two great weapons in our Spiritual arsenal of warfare. One is the word of God & one is the word of our testimony! Never be scared to give your testimony to someone because you never know, your testimony may hold the key to someone else’s healing in it. You never know if the words of your testimony have someone’s freedom from bondage locked up in it. Never be scared to give your testimony. You never know, you might reach a madman & help him be free or you may reach a king& change a nation. Just like in Mark 6:12-14, Jesus’ name had been noised abroad & King Herod heard of him, and through these testimonies they changed a nation.

Now, I know if you are anything like me you may be kind of apprehensive at times in telling your testimony because you might be afraid if people know the real deal… they might not want to sit by you in church anymore. If they knew that the source of your crazy love for Him and praise to Him stemmed from your knowledge of where God had really brought you from… If they KNEW who they were sitting next to… Ohhh, if they knew you had been raped by your spouse last night and had to walk in church this morning and sit next to him with a smile on your face or beaten by your mother as a child and told “what happens in this house stays in this house” or if they knew your body used to be for sale for drugs… OH, God… If they knew they were sitting next to an Ex-drug dealer, an ex-thief or an ex-killer for hire… My God… They may just slide over on the pew a little bit… But don’t worry how your testimony sounds or what it contains because God will guide you as to when you should share it and how much of it to share. God gives us wisdom so be wise and follow the leading of the Holy Ghost. Just like in Matt 10:16-20 it says behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves. But beware of men: for they will deliver you up to the councils, and they will scourge you in their synagogues; and ye shall be brought before governor’s and kings for my sake, for a testimony against them & the gentiles. But when they deliver you up take no thought how or what ye shall say: for it shall be given you in that hour what ye shall speak: for it is not ye that speaks, but the Spirit of your Father which speaketh in you.

So, I leave this with you today…

Have no fear for God has equipped you for such a time as this. Never be afraid for we have not been created with a spirit of fear but of power, love and a sound mind. The Bible also says ye shall have power after which the Holy Ghost has come upon you. So, speak boldly under the unction of the Holy Ghost! You never know who your testimony may help set free. It may be a woman in bondage crying out to be free. It may be a madman who lives trapped in his own mind bound by demonic voices and influence and you the only voice that penetrates his darkness, or it may even be a King and your testimony is the one thing that guides his choices in changing a nation. So, be strong and speak your testimony…

God bless… and remember, don’t just attend Church… to Be the Church.
