“What’s in your bag?”

During my studies one day the Lord posed a question to me… He said, “What did David kill Goliath with?” I said, “A stone.” Think that I know this story so well. I have read it over and over, but as we all know there are deeper things in God that we can easily miss. So I began to do a word search on the scriptures about David and Goliath.

In 1 Samuel 17 The account of events that took place between David and Goliath are given to us. David, in previous chapters and verses was reported as working in his father’s fields keeping sheep. He was a shepherd. He gave account of his life and the times he had to protect his father’s flock against a lion and a bear. He also told of his weapons as being a sling shot and stones. He had years of practice with these tools that God had given him and had allowed him to become familiar with. He was skilled in the art of using these weapons. I am sure there were days that he practiced with them to ensure that he was very accurate and aware of just how to hold his hands and just when to release the stones from the sling. I am sure he tried different types of stones in his sling to find which ones worked best with his type of sling. He was skilled and experienced with HIS sling and stones. He knew how to use HIS weapons of warfare. He was comfortable with his weapons. So in the account given in 1 Samuel 17:17-54 when David’s father Jesse sent him to the line of battle, he took his sling with him as I am sure he did everywhere he went. When got to the battle field and witnessed the actions of Goliath it angered him, and David said in 17:26 “what shall be done to this man that killeth this philistine and taketh away the reproach from Israel? For who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God? When the men heard what David said they told it to Saul, the king. Saul called for David. In 17:33-36 Saul said to David, thou art not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him: for thou art but a youth. (How many know you have to be careful who you allow to speak into your life?) David understood this and he began to encourage himself with his own words back to Saul. He gave the account of the lion and the bear to Saul and ended his statement with “& this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them seeing he hat defiled the armies of the living God!” Then David gave glory unto God in his statements and said the Lord that delivered me out of the paw of the lion & out of the paw of the bear, HE will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine. With this Saul told David go. He then put his armor on David to use in battle, but David said in vs. 39 “I cannot go with these for I have not proved them. And David put them off. He was not accustomed to these weapons so he went with what was in his bag. He went out with HIS weapons of warfare. His sling and he chose five smooth stones from the brook and went into battle armed with what he was familiar with. What are your weapons of warfare? Prayer? Outreach? Teaching? Preaching? Greeting new people to our church? Music ministry? What weapons are you familiar with to assist the kingdom move forward? David had his sling and stones in his bag… What’s in your bag? David went out against Goliath, and the scriptures go into detail about the armor and shield of Goliath. It describes the weapons of warfare that Goliath brought out to destroy David. The enemy always brings out weapons against us to destroy us, but how many know that no weapon formed against us shall prosper? David went out to meet Goliath and just like the enemy does us, Goliath began to try to intimidate David with his words. The word says that Goliath disdained David because of his appearance and his fair countenance. Never judge a book by it’s cover. Goliath began to yell at David saying… Am I a dog, that thou comest to me with staves? Then he cursed David by his gods. NOT OUR GOD… then made threats to David saying come to me and I will give thy flesh to the fowls of the air and the beasts of the field. David was not moved by any of this, He was confident in what he brought with him. He told Goliath, you come to me with sword, shield and spear, but I come in then a me of the LORD of hosts, the GOD of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied. Then David gave God the glory even before the battle began. He said, this day will the LORD deliver thee into mine hands and in vs. 49 when God did just that. David put his hand in his bag, took out a stone and slang it… He pulled out what he was familiar with. He slang the stone and smote the Philistine in the forehead. (The word smote here is the Hebrew word Nakah, with the root Hiphil which means to strike or hit.) however, in vs. 50 that David fan, and stood upon the Philistine, and took his sword and drew it out of the sheath thereof and slew him and cut off his head therewith. And when the Philistines saw their champion was dead, they fled. The word “slew” here means to kill. It comes from the word “muwth” which means to die. David brought down Goliath with the weapons of warfare that he was familiar with. He declared by the Lord that Goliath would come down and in this He gave God the glory prior to the victory even came, even before he faced the enemy. He learned about the enemy and began to speak victory. (1 Sam 17:36-37). David brought down Goliath with the stone, but he killed him with Goliath’s own sword. He drew Goliath’s own sword and killed him with his own sword. So the very weapon that Goliath meant for David’s destruction, David then turned it around and used it to kill Goliath and in doing so defeated his whole army. In vs. 52 the word says that after Goliath was dead the Philistines fled and the men of Israel and of Judah arose & shouted, and pursued the Philistines. The word goes on to say they pursued the Philistines through three cities and they spoiled their tents. They not only killed the enemy but took back things that had been stolen from their land and also the belongings of the enemy. In vs. 54 it states that David took the armour of Goliath into his tent. He not only used in battle the weapons of the enemy that were meant to kill him but he was able to keep those weapons for his own. How many know that when you defeat the enemy you become familiar with his weapons. Now you are able to use those weapons as your own to defeat the enemy for others because you recognize his weapons. David was able in this situation to stand in the face of the enemy and not be afraid of what he was facing. He stood in the name of the Lord and not only defeated the enemy but used the weapons designed to kill him to defeat and kill the enemy. What the enemy meant for evil in David’s life, GOD turned around for David’s good.

Let’s look at another example. In like 8:43-48 we see the woman with the issue of blood. The woman with the issue of blood had this issue for 12 years before she was healed. During this time the enemy attempted to destroy her mentally, physically, emotionally & spiritually. In her day according to Leviticus 15:19 -27 the scriptures speak of how if a woman has her normal flow that she is unclean for those days & also anything she sits on and her bed is unclean. Any one who touched her or her bed was unclean. Vs. 25 says and if a woman have an issue of her blood many days out of the time of her separation, or if it run beyond the time of her separation; all the days of the issue of her uncleanness shall be as the days of her separation: she shall be unclean.

So when we get to Luke 8:43 we find this woman who has had to live with no human contact for 12 years. She has spent all her money on trying to get well. She has had to announce for 12 years, everywhere she went that she was “unclean”. So that no one would accidentally bump into her and be made unclean as well. She is weak in her body & she has nothing left. Can you imagine 12 years of no human contact. She had long forgotten the warmth of a hug that we take for granted every day. Every time she had to announce “unclean” she felt the bondage of shame and others moved away from her in fear of toughing her. Can you imagine not hugging your child for 12 years? The pain and guilt she must have felt & then after all those years she hears of this man Jesus! In Luke 8:39 it says speaking of Jesus, “it was published throughout the whole city how great things He had done.” She heard that he was now here in her town & her faith is starting to get high at the thought of being healed by Jesus. She has tried everything else. Can you say, “why not try Jesus?” She was excited at the thought because, his coming had been noised throughout the land… Faith comes by hearing, hearing by the word of God. We have the word of God and the word of our testimony. Now He is here. I can see her, so broken and ashamed but full of faith. Her spirit was willing even though her body was weak. I see her trying to get close & the enemy whispering that word that has brought her shame for 12 years… “unclean”… and as she moves closer the word says Jesus was surrounded. Vs. 42 says the people thronged him. This word throng in the Hebrew is sumpnigo & means to press round or throng one so as almost to suffocate him. I see her looking at the crowd around him & the desperation of her one chance at healing passing her by. The devil filling her with fear & shame as that word of bondage passed her lips, quietly at first… “unclean” … at the sound of this word a few people moved away from her. Then I see her move closer & say it again … “unclean”… more people moved away from her & I see her faith grow as she takes the weapon that the enemy has used to bind her for 12 years and now she sees her chance to turn it around to use for her advantage. I see more people move and her urgency to get to Jesus grows as she is getting close and I hear her get louder and louder. “Unclean”! “UNCLEAN” until finally her fingers touched that precious hem & she felt the fount of her blood that has been her bondage for 12 years leave her. At once Jesus stopped! Vs 45 says Jesus said, “who touched me?” The disciples told him Master the multitude throng thee & press thee & thou sayest who touched me? But Jesus knew that someone touched Him with more than their hand. Most who touched Him fall under that scripture that says, your lips speak my praises but your heart is far from me. But this woman touched Him with her whole being. I see her shaking, excited yet afraid. Knowing that she just used the weapon that the enemy used for 12 years to keep her in bondage as the avenue to Jesus feel & to receive her healing. In doing so she gained so much more than just her healing. In exercising her faith she not only used the weapon of shame that kept her bound up in the word “unclean” to receive her healing, her faith was also the avenue that brought her to the point that she became the only woman that Jesus ever referred to as daughter when he said, “Daughter, be of good comfort: thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace”. How many today are in bondage? How many today have had toe enemy form a weapon against them? Today is the day & now is the hour to take that same thing the enemy has used against you to hold you in shame & bondage & use it as an avenue to get to the feet of Jesus!! You will through doing this, gain the power to then use that same weapon and your knowledge through your testimony and prayers to help others be free. You have the word of God and the word of your testimony. There is power in the word of your testimony. The bible says to whom much is given much is required. If you have been given healing and know that God is a healer, it is time for you to now use that knowledge and level of faith to lay hands on the sick and see them healed through the power of the Holy Ghost according to the scripture that says we are healed by his stripes. He gave healing to you as a gift, now it is a weapon of warfare in your bag… It is your smooth stone to use against the enemy when you see others held in bondage by sickness. Your testimony of how God healed your heart and mind from that childhood trauma or that abusive marriage will help the next person that comes broken to be healed because of your testimony of how you were made whole. It is time for us to be like David and the woman with the issue of blood. Ask yourself, what weapons of warfare do you have in your bag. What smooth stones do you have hidden in your bag that you are familiar with in battle? What do you have locked up in you that can free someone else from the bondage of their past? Search your heart and ask God to reveal your weapons of warfare to you. Then reach in that bag of faith and pull out those weapons of warfare from your past victories and set your nation free. Want your kids to be free? Release those weapons of warfare in someone else’s life. Help them be free. When you are about your Father’s business and He will be about yours. Begin to walk in faith and recognize the weapons of warfare that the enemy is using against you. Turn them around to work for your advantage and use those same weapons to defeat the enemy’s hold on your life and kill his power over your mind. You can be free… So I challenge you to look deep inside yourself and ask, what is in your bag?I'm a paragraph. Click once to begin entering your own content.
